“Summer Summer Summer Time ! Let’s just kick back and unwind”! Its finally summer and for a lot of us that means vacations, beach trip, margaritas during the week, and fun in the sun. Now with all the fun you’ve got planned (Or don’t have planned, spontaneous living is cool too) you want to make sure that your skin is properly taken care of so that you don’t spoil all the fun with heat rashes, sunburns, dry skin, or any other unfortunate things that can happen due to lack of proper skin care. Skin care necessities differ during the winter versus the warmer months, and we’re here to give you the tips and products necessary to maintain radiant, hydrated skin that’s ready for some fun in the sun! Rather your skin type is oily, dry, or a combination of both, it's important to maintain hydrated skin to keep that summer fun going!

  1. Keep sunscreen handy
It is important to take care of your skin from the outside as well, and what better way of doing that than by moisturizing and putting on sunscreen daily? Putting on moisturizing sunscreen not only protects the skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays but it also ensures that your body is getting its vitamins and nutrients that are essential for soft, radiant skin. The best time to moisturize the skin is directly after contact with water, to ensure that your skin is penetrated and the moisture is locked in! When purchasing sunscreen products look for Zinc Oxide as the ONLY active ingredient, as many store brand sunscreens have other active ingredients that have cancer causing agents in them.Products with Vitamin E, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Jojoba Oil, or Beeswax in it: Your skin will thank me later. If you’re feeling adventurous you can create your own sunscreen using the above ingredients! I’ve ordered all of the above items from Amazon at a reasonable price, so check them out !
  1. Exfoliate !
“Dead skin is awesome! “ Said no one. EVER. Exfoliating is definitely important to maintaining radiant skin in the winter time. From your face all the way down to your toes, removing the dead cells from your body is one of the best ways to get flawless skin. Exfoliating products vary from gloves and brushes, to facial scrubs and body masks. You can also make your own exfoliate using a lot of household items such as lemons or baking soda mixed with tons of love. With the summer time yielding hotter temperatures, our skin tends to produce more oil, dead skin, and to attract dirt. Ridding your face of these things will make your skin thank you tremendously. Exfoliating too much does exist, and can irritate your skin, so aim to exfoliate 2-3 times a week, preferably at night to reduce the chance of skin inflammation. My personal favorite skin exfoliator is St Ives Apricot Scrub. I’ve been using it since I was about 16 and it not only provides baby smooth skin, but it's inexpensive, easily found, and smells great! You can purchase it at major retailers, hair stores, and at Amazon for less that 7 bucks.
  1. Limit the makeup
Oh no, not the makeup! Yes, the makeup should be kept to a bare minimum during the summer. Think about it like this:  Makeup has the potential to clog pores and during the summer your pores are naturally larger because of the increased perspiration that occurs. And during the summer, particularly between the hours of 11am- 3 pm daily, you have many more UV rays preying on our beautiful skin, causing us to naturally sweat more and increasing the chance of . So makeup + bigger pores + sweat= a big messy face of clogged skin and a still lack of UV Ray coverage. Also, wearing makeup consistently during the summer can cause some killer tan lines and the differentiation between your face’s color and your neck or the rest of your body will be visibly different for a few weeks.  Some brand of makeup actually carry SPF and UV Ray defense chemicals in them, like Clinique and Dior, which is fine to wear, but try to let your skin breathe and enjoy its natural radiance during the summertime, and enhance that natural skin beauty that we all have the ability to achieve. Is it a rainy day or overcasted? Now on days where there is an overcast or it's raining feel free to wear makeup but try to find a concealer or base with some SPF in it, you’ll thank me later.
  1. Cover it up!
It is big floppy hat season ladies! In addition to such, it's also “wear clothes as much as possible’” season too. Now I know someone is thinking “ But it’s the summer time and it hot! What do you mean wear clothes?”  Well it’s true that it is hotter during the summer, but remember those UV rays I keep mentioning? Well they love to come out to play and have no problem causing skin cancer, dry skin,  and heat rashes.  To prevent these things from occurring, wear as much clothing as tolerable while out in the sun. Cover ups are very essential after direct contact with water, because water dries out the skin and the sun will bake that skin like an oven on 450 degrees.  If you already wear sunscreen, than staying covered up is an added bonus. If you don’t like wearing sunscreen (like me),  opt for some sunglasses, a hat, and some clothes.  Don’t wear too much clothes to where you risk the chance of having a heat attack or that will make you constantly sweat, but just enough to limit how many UV rays make it to your skin, which is definitely the motive.

       5.   Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water
I’m sure we’ve all heard that saying of drinking 8 glasses of water a day and how it is good for you. Well the saying definitely rings true during the summer, because drinking a lot of water is very beneficial in many ways and can also help save your life. Water helps your kidney flushes toxins from your body and disperse nutrients throughout the body, improving the skin’s appearance. It also helps prevent skin inflammation, which is the cause of clogged pores and acne.Warmer weather naturally causes us to perspire more, which makes our body lose vital fluids. A lack of proper hydration can cause your skin to appear dry and to have wrinkles, which are symptoms of your body being dehydration. Dehydration affects your kidney’s function of filtering fluids and toxins from your body, which can lead to overheating, dizziness, or even lack of consciousness. To prevent this, aim towards drinking more water daily to improve your skin’s appearance both long term and short term.

It’s the summer time ladies, let’s enjoy it ! Kick back and unwind, take up a new hobby, and get out and have some fun in the sun! Don’t let dry, sun-burned skin get in the way of all that fun, so make sure to keep our tips in mind for that trip to ensure your skin is definitely on FLEEK all summer long, which means what else ladies? Skin on FLEEK during the fall too! Small, consistent life changes can have a great long-term impact, both good and bad. Let’s lean towards the good end of the spectrum and keep it cool by keeping some sunscreen on deck, exfoliating, covering up when in excessing sunlight, staying hydrated, and limiting the amount of makeup worn. Trust us, we won’t steer you wrong because us girls just want to have fun, and especially during the summer!
